Life often brings us challenges, but no challenge is insurmountable. Let's work through this together.
Greetings, I'm Evelynn Freeman!
LIMHP, M.S. Ed. ,Therapist
Seeking therapy is not a sign of weakness or a moral failing. By choosing not to be consigned to distress you demonstrate vitality and evolution rather than stagnation.
Gender Identity & Gender Dysphoria
My experience with gender identity stems from personal experience as a transgender woman, LGBTQIA2S+ leadership and group administration, and direct experience with gender expansive clients. I love helping folks find the harmony that can only come from living authentically. You don't need to experience dysphoria or conform to traditional transgender narratives to want to explore gender.
Depression
Life can be absolutely austere, but that isn't all it can be. Depression isn't about the cessation of sadness but rather than rediscovery of what makes life worth living. We will working on recognizing the thought and behavior patterns that lead to depression and modifying them with strategies that work for you.
Addiction
Addiction can affect anyone and understanding how it is affecting you, what you want out of life, and what can be done to get there form the theoretical framework of my philosophy of addiction treatment.
Other Issues
Don't see what's troubling you here? That's alright! I don't have space to list all of the issues I have experience with in just a few bullet points. Schedule a consult with me and we'll determine if my experience and temperament are a good fit with you.
Life Transitions
Everyone reading this will struggle with change at some point. We are neurologically predisposed to resist change. Distress is a natural consequence of this. Seeking therapy to cope with change is not a sign of weakness, but rather of fortitude.
Anxiety
Anxiety presents as diversely as the people who experience it. However you experience anxiety we'll collaborate to hone individualized strategies for you to take the back the reins.
ADHD & Autism Spectrum
Neurodiversity is a topic I've studied since adolescence and working with the neurodiverse population has since becoming a passion of mine. Psychoeducation, unconditional positive regard, and client responsive symptom management form the cornerstone of my ADHD and Autism Spectrum treatment protocol.
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders (ED's) are subject to an impressive amount of misinformation. ED's are seldom just about food, not everyone with an ED is thin, and ED's are not something that only occurs in affluent Caucasian teenage girls. I experienced an eating disorder myself in early adolescence. I have since sought to enhance my understanding of eating disorders from a clinical perspective through persistent psychoeducation and client collaboration.
Styles and Methods
As we get to know each other and we discuss what you hope to achieve, I’ll apply different perspectives and techniques of therapy. My favorites are explained below. I’m happy to discuss many others I am experienced with, including cognitive behavioral, feminist, and psychodynamic.
Narrative Therapy
Every culture throughout history has told stories to record events, instill values, and capture the imagination. However, life seldom affords us the opportunity to consider how our story is structured. Narrative therapy does just that. Approaching issues from a narrative perspective puts you in the driver's seat of your own issues and relates it to the cultural, fictional, and historical stories that color our world.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)
Do events cause us to feel a certain way? This theoretical orientation postulates that this is not the case. While events can certainly influence us, it is our thoughts and beliefs that have true control of how we experience them. Fortunately, we can shape and mold our thoughts and beliefs through awareness and reframing to challenge the irrational thoughts that cause us distress.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy combines concrete skill based interventions with mindfulness models to help you cope with distress and modify behavior in the moment. Skills based approaches like DBT are valuable for that their transparency and concrete utility and application.
Existential
While philosophy and therapy don't seem like they would be related, the exploration of complex issues has long necessitated a broader perspective. When it comes to things like the meaning of life, death, freedom, alienation, and purpose the existential approach seeks to make you aware of the possibilities presented by our lives.
